I recently had the good fortune to be a guest on National
Public Radio’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross. I
must say, she was every bit as articulate and kind as she
comes across on her radio show! Talking with her was a
wonderfully delightful experience. Our discussion
focused on many of the topics covered in Speaking for
Spot
including: medical decision-making, dealing with the
diagnosis and treatment of cancer, putting a price on health
care, how to assess quality of life, and the process of
euthanasia.
The interview was first aired on March 19, 2009. A
shorter version was re-aired on August 31, 2009 as the lead
program for Fresh Air's "Animal Week".
Following both interviews, I received a flood of emails that
were truly moving. Many listeners told me about their
own beloved pets and the pain involved in caring for them
when ill and feelings of profound loss at the end of their
lives. Many people described crying as they were
driving along listening to the show (I sure hope Terry and I
were not the cause of any accidents!).
Those who posted their comments on the Fresh Air
website and who emailed me directly shared many
heart-warming stories, as well as pictures.
I invite you to listen to the Fresh Air interview if
you haven’t already done so. Please visit the links
